New approaches to
Sustainable Development

Three seminars at the Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference, Kiev, May 2003

As part of work organised by the European EcoForum three international seminar workshops are being held as parallel events to the Kyiv Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference. They will explore new and emerging issues relatring to sustainable development practice and examine the interface between environmental and social development concerns. Each will feature a range of NGO perspectives and offer a chance to discuss how work on these issues may best be taken forward. Contributions from the floor will be welcome.

These seminars cover three important aspects of sustainable development:

• Poverty and Environment: understanding the links and developing action
• Environment, Public Health and Sustainable Development
• Local action for sustainable development: from Local Agenda 21 to Local Action for the 21^st century.

This seminar will look at:

• Action to link poverty and environmental concerns in Ukraine
• Mapping the links between poverty and a poor environment
• Building links between social and environmental action
• The development of Environmental Justice activity in Europe

This seminar will look at:

• Poor environment and poor health: how are they linked?
• Environmental action to improve health
• Public health and sustainable development: two views of the same thing?
• Work towards the 2004 WHO European Conference on Environment and Health

Friday May 23^rd , 9.00-11.00, Rm 23, Expo Centre.

This seminar will look at:

• Lessons for Local Agenda 21 – what has been learnt from 10 years work?
• NGO and local government co-operation – towards better practice
• Linking NGOs across Europe – the potential for networking
• Looking ahead – Local Action for the 21^st century
